Solomon Browne & Union Star 40th anniversary – exhibition and candle lighting

Date/Time
19/12/2021
11:00 am - 6:00 pm

To mark the 40th anniversary of the loss of The Solomon Browne lifeboat and The Union Star, The Solomon Browne Memorial Hall will be open for an exhibition about the tragedy. Entry is free. We are very grateful to the support of the RNLI and Mousehole Archive group who have provided images for the exhibition.

The eight-strong crew of the Solomon Browne lifeboat, from Penlee, perished when they were called out in horrendous conditions on 19 December 1981. All eight people on board the Union Star, which was being swept towards the Cornish coast, also lost their lives.

The loss of The Solomon Browne and the Union Star have had a profound effect on the community in and around Mousehole, so to give the community a way of sharing their support for the families who lost loved ones, we will be providing glass jars with candles for people to place on Duck Street and at Mousehole Harbour. Each jar will have a tag for people to write their own personal messages.

We will also be collecting donations for the Solomon Browne & Union Star Memorial project, which is raising funds to place a memorial in a meadow on the cliffs directly above the final resting place of the Solomon Browne and Union Star.

We are currently collecting glass jars, which will be given out with candles on the 19th. Clean jars, with labels removed are being collected at the following venues until 16 December:

Solomon Browne Hall, Duck Street, Mousehole – please leave jars in the box outside the Hall

Coast Interior Accessories, Mill Lane, Mousehole – open daily 11am-4pm

Penzance Community Fire Station
